I know the first time I ever fitted a ring my hands were a little shaky as I thought I may be hurting the bird. I can state here and now that, as long as the bird is of correct size, it is a completely painless experience for your young Java chick. Below is a quick guide on how to carry out the procedure of fitting closed rings. |

Check your young Java from the age of 7 days old.
You
can see in this photo that the quills in the wing are approximately 3mm
(1/8") long. This is generally the best time to fit the closed ring.
Be
vigilant as the growth rate from 7 days is rapid and, if not careful,
the chick can grow very quickly beyond ringing size. |

Step 1
(Decide which leg you are going to fit the
ring to. Gently hold the chick in your left hand and once the bird is settled gently hold the three front toes together. |
Step 2 Push the ring over the front toes making sure that all three toes are in the ring.
Step 3 Once the ring is over the toes, gently push it up over the back toe.
Step 4 The ring will only slide as far as the claw, this is where you very carefully pull the toe out of the ring. (This is delicate procedure but once you have fitted half a dozen it becomes a lot easier). Once the toe is released gently slide the ring back down the leg as if you were going to slip the ring off the chicks foot. If the ring comes off, then try again the following day as the chick is not big enough. If the ring hits resistance at the foot, then you have successfully fitted your ring.
